Going to Where?

[High Earth Orbit] I’m super excited to meet a lot of people I’ve corresponded with, but haven’t had the chance to meet yet. The Where 2.0 program looks really good.

Metacarta Parsing FoFRedux

[High Earth Orbit] So I passed in one of the output feeds from FoFRedux (a feed aggregator that supports GeoRSS) through the Metacarta GeoParser to produce a map of locations that show up in my feeds. FoFRedux -> Metacarta Example: SlashDot article locations So now you can use a feed aggregator to display, say locations of articles and posts for your friends feeds.

Google search API’s

[Information Takes Over] Google search API’s June 7th, 2006 Google recently (1 June) announced their Google AJAX Search API which is really rather neat! One definate advantage is the ability to geocode UK postcodes. All you need to do is use the results from the GlocalSearch() object to get at the lat/lng. see the code behind this demo app. An immediate application that I can think of is for Talis’ Silkworm directory. where currently you have to zoom into the area that your library is located. If the directory could just use the postcode info you had already provided, then all you would need to do is specify the exact spot! Loki = Excessive GeoTags

[geobloggers] We designed Loki to be site aware so that the GeoTag interface inserts the correctly formated tag for that site - hit GeoTag on Flickr and it meets your standard, hit the same button on Socialight and it correctly inserts a tag into their interface.

Eye-Fi - gps camera, easy

[High Earth Orbit] This is an incredibly smart and easy way to add location to photos and still use any camera you choose. It does this by measuring the Wifi signals in the area and talking to Loki (no, not that one)

Geojerking

http://wholesomedick.livejournal.com [Wholesome 8===D] There's also an growing number of services using latitude and longitude as search features. Some people call this geotagging, or geocaching, or geocoding, or (most accurately) geojerking, or a new set of buzzwords useful for getting venture capital and starting businesses that will fail in less than a year.

Reboot 8: The 3 Threes

[/Message] Matt Webb -- Matt gave a presentation called Making Senses (see here), in which he attacks the general question of how to improve the browser experience based on a reflection on various user senses and how analogs of hearing, touch, smelling, sight, and so on could better inform how we wander around. Awesome preso, and one that I plan to return to in more detail, next week.

http://radar.oreilly.com [O'Reilly Radar] As the number of mapping platforms increases, standards start to be more important. If upcoming wants to offer access to its database for people to include in their own mashups or applications, what data format or web services API standards should they adhere to?
