It was very hard going to school full or part time and working full time but the idea was to sacrifice the present for the future. I went to work for the Lunar and Planetary Institute as a computer technician for the next two years and worked with planetary geologists, volcanologists and astrophysicists and attended lectures by exclusive researchers. I continued taking classes at night to get a masters degree in Futures Studies. I was 27 when I first read books by Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung that had a profound effect on my life. A few years earlier I had taken up the hobby of nature photography and constantly visited a nature preserve to walk the woods and observe and photograph wildlife. I continued this for nearly eight years and it was probably the most important thing in my life. I had reached a kind of turning point where the past no longer afflicted me and I felt myself searching for some kind of greater truth. After two years I got bored with my job and went to work for McDonnell Douglas Space Station Corporation. When they lost their contract with NASA I went back to school to get a teaching certificate and worked as a substitute teacher. I taught ESL full time for two years and while traveling in Central America on spring break I became very ill, developed a thyroid tumor, and had surgery. My health continued to deteriorate and the HMO and specialists could not help me recover. I was physically unable to walk across the room without resting halfway and my breathing was labored like I was climbing stairs even at rest. Eating food caused nausea and my appetite diminished to one meal a day or less. After going to the doctor and getting nowhere for 18 months I gave up trying and moved to the hill country near Austin on a friends ten acre deer lease. My muscles were always becoming tighter and tighter until I couldn’t move my head or breathe well. The vertigo was so bad many days I had to stay in bed. I had night seats and tinnitus and when I tried to walk for exercise my calf muscles deteriorated to almost nothing. The symptoms would come and go in cycles of several days or weeks and I struggled to survive alone in my cabin. I was 34 and had come out into nature to die but I slowly recovered enough to be active for 2-4 hours a day. After six months loneliness drove me into town to meet people where I made a small circle of friends and began to write books and do research at the local libraries. I wrote a couple of children’s books, a book of poetry, and a book on the Plague in the Middle Ages. I made a garden, poached deer, and went for long walks in the woods. I met my friends for coffee and we talked about people and places and ideas. My body no longer worked but I rationalized that I could survive the relapses and live in the world of the mind. After 18 months I moved to West Texas to care for my grandfather when my grandmother died suddenly. He was 85 and had Parkinson’s disease so I was sick and he was sicker. I lived there for several years and during a period of recovery worked several hours a day moving houses with my 73 year old uncle. The symptoms were becoming worse with every relapse so when I recovered enough to walk around I went to Cuba for two weeks as a kind of last hurrah. I met a girl there and tried to stay in touch to no avail. On return I relapsed very hard and spent a year largely confined to a chair. My CNS was much degraded and I could not stand light or sound and could not even read or listen to music. My face was chalk white with a frozen expression and my eyes were rolled back in my head. I could only speak a few words at a time with great difficulty. My mental function came back slowly, listening to soft classical music and writing my own music in my head, then reading books again. Finally I was able to talk and could stand light and watch TV. I got in the car and drove up into the mountains where my family had always gone and I sat on the river bank and had a mystical experience that changed my life. It was then that I found an osteopath who treated me for over two years with diet and vitamins and I slowly improved. I had a terrible premonition of disaster that was visual and very specific but I kept feeling the memories slipping back into my unconscious and try as I might I eventually forgot about it completely. As soon as I was able I moved to Lubbock and went back to school studying microbiology. I was still only able to walk a couple of hundred yards a day before I would collapse and continued to have good days and bad days. In the second year I read in the literature that a certain percentage of bacterial infections such as staph and campylobacter turned into autoimmune diseases. I took antibiotics for a short while and improved markedly. I joined the Hanta Virus Team, read all the scientific papers I could find on the subject and did some field work. I still struggled with my health and was in constant distress from muscle dysfunction. I had another premonition, this time I imagined that the space shuttle broke up and rained down literally in my back yard. I tried to tell family friends who worked at NASA or my professor and fellow students at the University but I was unable to make myself do so. The space shuttle broke up at 50,000 feet over West Texas and the first pieces to reach earth landed barely over a hundred miles away. Not only was I distraught at failing to warn NASA about the loss of the shuttle the memories of the first premonition came suddenly flooding back to me and I realized that I had failed to warn people not once but twice. Tears poured out of my eyes for hours and I began to dress in all black and entertain thoughts of suicide even to the point of saying so out loud when I thought I was alone. I stopped eating and my weight dropped from 170lbs to 120lbs in a very short time. My parents thought that I was going to die and so I left Lubbock and returned to Houston to stay with my dad. I slowly recovered my weight and my health and decided to embark on a novel scientific project. Bacteriophage therapy was the use of benign virus to kill deadly bacteria. I read everything I could find on the subject as part of my studies. After my illness my main goal in life had been to somehow save one million or more human lives when I recovered. Bateriophage therapy was the means to do so and the deadly bacteria I chose was the plague. The USSR had created a biological weapon out of Yersinia pestis that was engineered with resistance plasmids to be immune to all antibiotics. If terrorists purchased this weapon from the Russian mob they could theoretically kill more than 90% of all people living in the US or even 90% of everyone on earth. The scientific articles on PubMed revealed a phage that had killed all but 1-2 of several thousand strains of Yersinia pestis. I found business partners and labs to do the experiments and to make the phage medication. I filled out a voluminous grant application and applied under a bioshield grant program for several million dollars to test and manufacture the medication. All this took me about 132 days start to finish and I mailed it in time for a review in November. In order to develop the skills necessary to do the work myself I applied to the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington to the T4 lab where the professor who had written the book on phage worked. I was granted one of the few positions in her lab and went to work on her projects learning how to isolate and grow phage and measure their ability to kill bacteria. We concentrated on E. coli, Staph, and other pathogenic strains central to her work.
