[Collected Miscellany] Collected Miscellany » Blog Archive » 65th Anniversary of the ...: However, immediately after the massacre occurred and well before the bodies were recovered, the news quickly spread through the GIs fighting for their lives in the Ardennes. As one historian has written, tales of the shootings “enraged the Americans and inspired them to fight with conviction and with little compassion, especially towards the SS”¦.” Although official U.S. military histories deny this, there is strong evidence that U.S. commanders gave orders for the killing of prisoners.

[Cinema Verdict] Review: Avatar: Now if only he doesn't blow it by falling in love with the clan's princess and going native then the deranged security chief won't have to commit unspeakable atrocities with the full-throated support of the American GIs, er, I mean the awful bastard hired killers. He's not offered a bigger slice of the Unobtainium haul, he doesn't feel compelled to save Earth, he got a bunch of scratches on his face from the local wildlife but that isn't genocide-provoking is it?

[Occidental Dissent] Occidental Dissent » Blog Archive » Review: Blood and Politics: Analyzing particularly the period from the end of World War II until today, they describe the general persona of each living generation, from the powerful proactive G.I.s, the thoughtful Silent, the values-obsessed Boomers, and the pragmatic 13ers, to the new coming-of-age generation of powerful, proactive Millennials. By situating each living generation in the context of a historical generational cycle and archetype, the authors claim to clarify the personality and role of each–and the inevitability of a coming crisis in America.[citation needed]”

[Seraphic Secret] Seraphic Secret: It Can (and is) Happening Here: A GIS is a combination of aerial photography and other databases (land ownership, telephone and utility customers and military intelligence data.) The GIS is stored and accessed as a digital file, and updated frequently (sometimes in real time.) Israel has used their GIS to select targets in Gaza, and then to call the civilians in the target building to tell them to get out before the smart bomb hits. Hamas made these residences into targets by storing weapons and other military equipment there.

[humanitarian.info] Ever have one of those years? And Darfur, mapped. at humanitarian.info: Not everybody believes that the situation in Darfur constitutes genocide (I personally am not convinced), but everybody can agree that there is widespread .However there are serious problems in using GIS and remote sensing in relief efforts, particularly in complex political emergencies like Darfur, and we haven't yet realised its full potential .

[Russia Blog] Russia Blog: Poisonous Myths of the Eastern Front: In contrast to the "dirty, ignorant, brutalized peasants of Nazi mythology" and traditional stereotypes of Russians as "mechanically inept and stupid", Americans began to emphasize the scale of industrial modernization in the Soviet Union, their growing religiosity (helped by Stalin's rehabilitation of the Church) and their focus on family - according to Life Magazine, Russians now "look like Americans, dress like Americans and think like Americans". The Red Army was lauded for its growing technical and operational competence, with its soldiers portrayed as decent, ordinary folks defending their families and Motherland from Nazi depredations, who did not want to die but were not afraid to do so if called upon [see the Frank Capra documentary Why We Fight: The Battle for Russia made in 1943 for an excellent example of this genre].

[My day] A Real Anti-War Movement: While I'd prefer we were out of Afghanistan, and I don't wish to dispute your blog, I believe one of your references may be out of date. Out of curiosity I looked up FM 26-10 on google, and found only a mention of FM 26-10-1, Unit Field Sanitation, 1-Oct-89 in the first 50 returns.

[Confessions of an Aca/Fan: The Official Weblog of Henry Jenkins] Confessions of an Aca/Fan: Archives: Comic Book Foreign Policy ...: Some of you will know that this was inspired by Michael Dean's "The New Patriotism" which was serialized in recent issues of Comics Journal and argued that comics were "circling the wagons" in response to the perceived threat to national security. As Dean puts it, "Now, some 60 years after the height of WWII and some 30 years after the end of the Vietnam War, mainstream comics seem to be making tentative gestures toward recreating the glory days of the wartime propaganda comic."

[zenpundit.com] zenpundit.com » Blog Archive » American Public Schools and History: College age youth are taught that the war was an exercise in American imperialism, meant to spread expoitative capitalism across the world, and that it is a myth that the GIs went to Europe to liberate the conquered countries or to bring democracy and freedom. Even depictions that are not entirely negative, such as Saving Private Ryan, depict the war solely as a personal tragedy and pointless death and destruction, and not about anything, and certainly not about anything good or admirable.
