[Computing, GIS and Archaeology in the UK] Dear ESRI, it’s not me, it’s you: In what can only be described as a noble act of self-sacrifice, ESRI have told us that as an educational charity we are no longer allowed to have an educational discount for using their software and, not only that, our license codes will cease to work at the end of this month. So, we have 3 weeks, with the Easter holidays in the middle, to extricate ourselves and our ongoing projects from ArcGIS and into something else or find the many thousands of pounds to buy the full licenses for all of our staff.

It is no accident that many successful open source products are developed and controlled by consortia which do not allow just anyone to willy-nilly say that what they have created is that product using the trademarked name.

There is a single “Tool” method on the OMD for two reasons. First, there are simply too many geoprocessing tools to fit on the OMD. Remember, if you have the ArcInfo license this would mean you’d have access to approximately 200 tools. In addition, the tools available will depend upon the license level that you have. Not only does this include the basic license level (ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcInfo), but also the ArcGIS extensions that you are licensing (3D Analyst, Spatial Analyst, many others). So, as you can see it simply makes sense to group all these tools into a single generic “Tool” method.
