[Los Angeles County Enterprise GIS] Santa Clara County releases its Geodata: After a three year legal battle, Santa Clara County finally provided a copy of its GIS parcel basemap data to the California First Amendment Coalition (CFAC) in compliance with California’s Public Record Act (PRA). Decisions from both the California Superior Court and the California Court of Appeal clearly affirmed that public agencies must provide their geodata in accordance with the PRA (California Government Codes §6250-6259). Generally, agencies can not charge a requestor of their geodata more than the direct cost of duplication, and they can not restrict how a requestor can use or redistribute the data. Santa Clara County had been selling its geodata for $ 158,000; the cost CFAC finally paid was $ 3.10 per disk, plus shipping.

[Greater Greater Washington] Zimmerman and Linton debate Google - Greater Greater Washington: They both exist on whatever taxes the state legislatures enact and local city/county governments collect on their behalf.) Unless DC, VA and MD want to relinquish control of WMATA to a federal agency with taxing powers. And I just don't see that happening--it would be a dramatic concession of state sovereignty--and there is no precedent for it.

[Directions Magazine - Press Releases] Articles - Directions Magazine: As readers of Directions Magazine no doubt are aware, the topic of outsourcing GIS and information technology jobs to India is at the center of a brewing political storm this election year.(Indeed the July 17 2004 issue carried an article on this topic.) Outsourcing is seen by some as the root cause of the high unemployment rate of information technology workers over the past few years.Others maintain that outsourcing work to India will allow American firms to remain productive and competitive given the shortfall in labor as baby boomers retire and American students choose not to pursue careers in engineering and technology.Regardless of which side one is on, what is uncontroversial is the fact that Indians - whether living in India or the United States - have assumed a prominent position at the core of the U.S.information technology (IT) sector. In this feature article, I discuss the fascinating confluence of industry restructuring, change and reform in U.S.immigration policy, and growing liberalization of the Indian economy that collectively brought Indians to center stage in the U.S.high tech sector.Four distinct periods can be identified.
