Geotags.org > Education - Change.org: Google Earth Adds 3-D Tour of Ancient Rome

[Change.org's Education Blog] I know you think I'm axiomatically anti-21st Century Skills, but I'm not. (If I fall -- or get pushed -- under a bus today, my one claim to fame would be that I wrote what may have been the first book about the Internet for kids back in the early 1990s).

[The Taylors' Travels] MARK & ANN’S TRIP TO EUROPE HALF OF APRIL, ALL MAY & A BIT OF JUNE ...: Actually, most of it was a pedestrian path between the Acropolis and Filopappos Hill, and as there was practically no-one else there it was quite a pleasant walk.  We have probably made the point before that almost anywhere you go in central Athens there are ancient relics and ruins beside the road, like this mosaic floor (of what, we know not) (P1010448), but this burrow (P1010449) was identified as the home of the god Pan.  We were actually looking for the observatory we had seen from the Acropolis before the cruise, and as we had seen only the dome did not recognise the majestic building behind a church ((P1010450) as being part of it, and continued down the street to Thesseion metro station, where we found this delightful miniature church (1010451).  It was worth the extra walk, however, for the temperature was going up and we were pleased to find a seat in a park under a spreading tree to eat our lunch.  Heading back in the direction we had come, we branched off up a steep side street and at last came to the gate of the National Observatory of Athens (P1010458).  There was still no dome evident, so we went through the gate and up to the observatory headquarters (P1010457).  It was deserted and locked, but we had a pleasant chat to a young Brisbane couple honeymooning around Europe.  Back to the main gate, we followed another path which led us to this ornate ceremonial gate (P1010452), and reasoning that something so elegant must lead to somewhere, followed the path around it and over to the edge of the hill, where we found the dome (P1010455).  And, just as you can see the dome from the Acropolis, so also can you see the Acropolis from the dome (P1010453).  The observatory is not just an astronomical observatory, however.  It also has seismology and geophysics, environmental research (which includes meteorology) and sustainable development, space applications and remote sensing, and astroparticle physics in its portfolio.  The telescope in this dome is a 40cm refractor which is no longer useful for scientific observation, but still serves an outreach function being available for visits by schools and community groups. The observatory’s present main telescope is a 1.2m Cassegrain in the Peloponese, while at time of writing they have a 2.3m Ritchey-Chretien undergoing final tests at Zeiss which is also to be located in the Peloponese.  Don’t worry about the technical terms if you don’t understand them.  They just refer to the optical configuration of the telescope.  Suffice to say that all large modern telescopes are of the Ritchey-Chretien configuration.

[BBC NEWS | Ethical Man blog] BBC - Ethical Man blog: Ethical Man is reborn: As suggested by the daring documentary "The Great Global Warming Swindle", the motivation to believe the unbelievable appears to be a follow-on from 20th-century Marxist radicalism. Numbed by the collapse of communism in 1989, deodorant-shunning radicals were finally forced to face the fallacy of their leftist lunacy and stood stranded without a cause.
