[geosciblog] Short for "GeologicalScienceBlog", subjects will include Geology, Climatology, Environmental Science, NASCAR, Beer, Property Rights, Politics from a Christian Conservative/Libertarian viewpoint, and random thoughts. My background is two degrees in Geology (BS, MS), 8 years of geology/environmental employment and almost 8 years of teaching Geology and Environmental Science on a Junior College level.

[NOVA Geoblog] NOVA Geoblog: Geology Connects: August Accretionary Wedge: So this perspective has stuck with me, and it's what inspired me to pitch "geology as a connector" as this month's Accretionary Wedge theme. (Newbies: the Wedge is a semi-monthly geoblogosphere carnival wherein different geobloggers .
[ScienceBlogs Channel : Physical Science] Chocolate chip cookie tectonics, take two : All of My Faults Are ...: Lab Lemming: doesn't it depend on whether the top of the dough crusts over early in the baking process? I think that the top of the cookie is analogous to the crust that forms on a lava lake: a thin brittle layer on top of something ductile.
[NOVA Geoblog] NOVA Geoblog: The Bridger Range, Montana: Once we had huffed and puffed up about tree line, we started to see some pretty cool geology. Here for instance, you can see tilted, folded, faulted Mississippian-aged strata that have been carved into by a glacier.
[ScienceBlogs : Combined Feed] Earthquake prediction and the L'Aquila earthquake : All of My ...: The San Francisco Examiner had a hilarious cartoon about how to use your pet to determine the size of an earthquake, Stanford was distributing what-to-do-in-an-earthquake pamphlets, and geology grad students were making bad jokes. When I heard that the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A's might be in the World Series, I said "wouldn't it be great if SF played Oakland, and there was an earthquake?"
[NOVA Geoblog] NOVA Geoblog: Rise of the Geoblogosphere: Yeah, the questioner was wondering exactly that: whether geoblogs' "exotic field trips" aspect was the sort of thing that would replace a traditional field trip or augment it. Additionally, he saw a huge value in visiting an actual outcrop and seeing how, when presented with identical facts, two geologists could offer different interpretations.

Much to the dismay of one editor who thinks the removal of thos whacky claims amounts to a violation of the Wikimedia’s neutral point of view.
[ScienceBlogs : Combined Feed] More tectonics of the Italian earthquake : All of My Faults Are ...: Amongst geologists who work in the Himalayas, there are ongoing debates over the role of "channel flow" (in which part of the deep crust gets squeezed out along two shear zones), extensional collapse (from building mountains too high to be supported by a hot, weak lower crust - I've heard this referred to as "Camembert tectonics"), and lithospheric delamination (in which the mantle lithosphere beneath the collision either peels off or comes off in some kind of blob that sinks into the mantle). The ideas that were inspired by Himalayan tectonics deal specifically with things that happen in continental collisions.
