Geotags.org > It's Maptacular!

http://jason0x21.livejournal.com [Jason!] For a while, there was a rudimentary system to connect a picture to a location on Flickr via a system of tags and a link to another website (here's an example). The guy running it got hired by Yahoo! (or Flickr, maybe), the functionality on his website went away, and he proceeded (presumably) to integrate this into Flickr.

Documenting Picasa: - and by 9 hours later over 1.6 million had been geotagged. Update: Some interesting comments by the flickr developer Rev Dan Catt at the Ogle Earth report on this, though interestingly nothing yet on Rev Dan Catt's own site GeoBloggers. (via Cosmos)

Ogle Earth: A blog about Google Earth.: For example, it allows for separate privacy settings for photos and their geospatial data. Of course, the geotags on hundreds of thousands of photos on your site will be de facto deprecated, leaving those users with a geotagging "inventory" the choice of continuing with geotags or starting over with the new system... High Earth Orbit: YahooFlickr finally released their built-in mapping tools. Here’s how their mapping works: Go to “Organize” your photos, and then select the “Map” tag Answer the Privacy question - location privacy will become more of an (via Cosmos)

Brain Off: Dan also lets loose a currently hidden EXIF option, so flickr will work with great tools like WWMX Location Stamper, etc. There is no option to have flickr look back through your photos for EXIF GPS data (this would probably really grind their dbs to a halt), so I expect some more hacks to fill in this gap once the developers api is up.
