[All Points Blog] Going mainstream means pricing in the $245 to $500 a seat range for the full market basket of capabilities (ArcGIS Server, SDE, IMS, ArcObjects, etc., etc) which ESRI sells in the $20K to $30K range. That's the simple economics of why mainstream, modern GIS companies outsell ESRI about 100 to 1 on a unit volume basis in mainstream Windows markets.

In fact, I’d have thought the very process of learning a new GIS would help you to understand more about the hidden assumptions and pros/cons of each manufacturer’s approach and make you better at picking the right tools for the job.

It is sometimes the mainstream media that use mashups to quickly convey the news.

[Directions Media - Podcasts] Podast: Geo and the Economic Downturn - All Points Blog: What is becoming a decisive factor in both government and mainstream markets is how much GIS users have to pay for what they get. Depressions have a way of focussing one's mind on that, so it is very disappointing that Directions does not discuss how in an economic downturn the price/performance of their products can determine which companies go out of business and which will thrive.

[Comments for Chris' GISmo's] Manifold vs the world at Chris’ GISmo’s: Part of being wise guys and fanatically pro-Microsoft is that it is a way for Manifold to make it clear to mainstream people that we are not legacy ESRI dolts. When mainstream people go shopping for GIS, they are bedeviled by imbeciles telling them they should spend tens of thousands of dollars on legacy 1990’s junk, by utopian fools who tell them their aim should be to subsidize “cross platform”
